Wylie and Slidesports impress on Le Mans debut

Ross Wylie and the Slidesports team enjoyed an unforgettable debut at the historic Le Mans circuit in northern France, leaving with top rookie honours. The team got a late call up to participate in round seven of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB after one of the original 61 entries withdrew only five days before the race. The team were ready however and by Thursday morning at 9:30am local time Ross was driving down the pit lane to start his first laps of the 8.469-mile circuit.“It was a good weekend,” said Ross. “Free practice was something else. The first laps around Le Mans were pretty amazing and something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. There is nothing to compare to going down the Mulsanne straight at 185 mph.”The Pall-ex/Fuel Card Services supported car clocked up the laps in the two 45-minute session and went into the afternoon qualifying session with a clear aim of being in the top 20 cars. Ross clearly knew his mission going a massive five and a half seconds faster than his best from free practice. His time of a 4”11.360 was almost good enough to hit their objective, missing out by just a tenth of a second to line up 21st on the grid.

Further progress was made in the race when Ross took advantage of a nine-car incident into the first chicane to leap up to 13th place. A safety car was required to clear away the stranded cars but once racing resumed Ross was in the hunt. A frenetic six laps of racing followed with battles running the length of the field. Ross put in a superb performance to hold his own against the more experienced French Carrera Cup racers to finish 13th overall and 5th of the UK runners.“Qualifying was relatively respectable. We were 21st at the end of the session but out aim was to be in the top 20 so we were happy enough with the result. The plan was to try and make some progress in the race. When the race started there was a little bit of contact at turn one and I managed to get through unscathed and up to 13th. I had a good dice with the French drivers and it was good clean racing. To finish the race fifth in the Carrera Cup GB and the first rookie home is a really good result and I’m very happy.”The Carrera Cup GB returns after a summer break to Snetterton on the 29th & 30th July for rounds eight and nine, where Ross will once again be joined by team-mate David Fairbrother in the Fuel Card Services/Pall-ex backed cars.
