Plug-in Mercedes E-Class hybrid coming spring 2019

Mercedes-Benz has revealed all on its new E-Class plug-in hybrid, due spring 2019.
Badged as ‘E 300 de’, the diesel-electric mid-size executive cruiser will be available as a saloon or estate, priced at £47,700 and £49,700 respectively.
Merc says that the plug-in E-Class redefines the executive hybrid segment, providing the ultimate combination of diesel’s long-distance efficiency and frugality with the emissions-free running of electricity.
Its powertrain brings together a 191bhp two-litre diesel engine and an electric motor, producing the equivalent of 120bhp, to provide fleet-friendly running costs and the kind of performance that would satisfy any speed demon.
On a combined cycle, it can achieve 166.2mpg, emitting 41g/km of CO2, rising to 44g/km for the estate.
Given a straight line, the E 300 de can get up to 62mph in 5.9 seconds, stretching to six seconds dead for the estate, with a top speed of 155mph.
Driving on electric power only, the plug-in E-Class saloon can cover 34 miles for the saloon (estate: 32 miles). The 13.5kWh battery can be fully recharged from ten per cent in under two hours with a 7.4 kW charger.
Every E 300 de comes well specced with the entry-level SE boasting blind spot assist, widescreen cockpit, four USB ports, touchpad with controller, illuminated door sills, spilt-folding rear seats, active parking assist with front and rear parking sensors, electro-pneumatic four-way lumbar support, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, keyless-go starting function, light carbon-grain aluminium trim with centre console in black open-pored ash wood, and heated front seats.
For an extra £2,395, the premium package adds Merc’s COMAND Online system, memory package, wireless charging, multibeam LED headlights, and all-round camera.
Driver assistance systems include a lane tracking package (£595) that introduces active lane keeping assist, and the more comprehensive driving assistance package (£1,695) adds active brake assist, active distance assist and active speed limit assist, active lane-change assist and evasive steering assist.
Order books are open now with first deliveries arriving in spring 2019.
Jess Wort, marketing manager at the Green Journey, comments: “Adding plug-in technology to the E-Class gives Eco-conscious upper-level company car drivers another excellent model to choose from.”
